In the golden retriever, skin disorders do occur, so a puppy should be well cared for to avoid rescues.
These dogs are easy to recognize by their dense and waterproof coat, which may be straight or moderately wavy. The coat should be rich and lustrous, as is stated by the AKC breed standard. Extremely light and dark coats are not accepted in these dogs. American and English varieties vary slightly in color, with American dogs being darker than their English relatives. Red is an unacceptable color in this breed, but mahogany dogs are accepted as “redheads.” Senior dogs can become darker or lighter, along with a noticeable whitening of fur around the face.

Allergies are very common in the dogs of this breed; they can be allergic to flea bites, pollen, dust, mold, or food ingredients. Symptoms of this disorder can be various: biting, licking, hair loss in some areas. It is necessary to consult a vet dermatologist. Other health problems associated with this breed are hip dysplasia, heart and eye problems, Von Willebrands disease, thyroid and epilepsy. Some of these conditions can be avoided if both parents are tested prior to mating and the defective genes are detected.
