Hip and elbow dysplasia is a developmental disease of young dogs, although symptoms can appear at any age. Dysplastic dogs cannot be used for breeding and should not be given excessive exercise, but they make good pets and playing companions. Rest and supportive care is recommended during the acute phase of the disease. Dysplastic dogs need moderate regular exercise, weight control and anti-inflammatory drugs. At the age of 7 or 8 years, with the decrease of muscle tone, arthritis becomes more noticeable. Many affected dogs have no visible symptoms of this disorder, but transmit it to the offspring.
