This dog breed is classified as sporting; originally it was developed from several hunting breeds to accompany hunters and find and fetch the killed prey both on water and on land. These dogs have excellent working abilities and a quiet temperament. This breed grows to be rather large: 22-24 inches at the withers and 65-70 pounds in weight. These dogs require much daily training and exercise and will be happy in active families that are ready to devote much time and attention to the pet.

photo, rescue
Most dogs of this breed are abandoned to rescues because of financial or personal problems in the family. Behavior problems is not the reason for abandoning these dogs. Pets of this breed are generally easy to deal with; they are very tolerant and friendly. These forgiving creatures will allow novice owners make many mistakes while training or socializing. These dogs need human company more than other canines do, as the breed was developed as a hunting companion working in packs. They need to interact with humans or other dogs on a regular basis to be fit and happy.
